Baby Kaleb

When Meg and I set out to babysit Mary’s handsome little boy, Kaleb, I knew I had to get a few photographs in the process. I was a bit unprepared—I left my flash at home, and I only had enough charge in my battery for a few shots (I just loaned out my D90 and extra batteries to Jess for her trip to New Orleans, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes back with).

No matter—I was able to get at least one shot of Kaleb eying his toys, and I’ll be back again next month for more (and this time I’ll be prepared). Thanks to Mary for letting us hang out with her little guy for the evening, and happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there!

Etsy Vintage-Style Earrings

I’ve admired Etsy for a long time now (I think I can thank Jamie for turning me on to it), but it took me a solid year and a half to finally purchase something from the site.

I was definitely not disappointed! Many thanks to Amy from cayennepeppy for these beautiful vintage-style lemon earrings. I just couldn’t resist the urge to get out the macro lens and capture the exquisite detail on these bad boys. I love them— I’m totally sold on Etsy.

Portrait: Jenn

This is part three of the little photo shoot we did back in March (see parts one and two). I didn’t get to spend quite as much time with Jenn—we only took a few quick shots. I guess that means you’ll have to come back and visit Chicago again, Jenn!

I love portraits that bring out the subjects eyes, and I think this one does just that.

So remember when I said I was going to show a three part series from a photo shoot I did with some awesome photographers and models in Chicago? I suppose it’s time to carry on with that.

Meet the next lovely model from our shoot, Phia.

Bittersweet

Last week ended up taking a very unexpected, bittersweet turn. I got a call from my mom on Monday night. My grandma Osmar had a stroke while walking on the beach that evening. She passed away on Tuesday morning.

I was back in Michigan by Tuesday evening, and by Thursday I was about ten hours north of Chicago in Michigan’s upper peninsula. It’s hard to express the range of emotions from the week—sadness and grief over losing my grandmother, relief and joy over being around so many loved ones and an uplifted spirit from reading the memoir that she had written about growing up poor during the Great Depression and then going on to raise eight children.

As sad and shocked as we all were, I think we all took comfort in the fact that she was on the beach of Lake Superior surrounded by such pure and peaceful beauty—a full circle back to her childhood on the great lake. As my uncle Ken said, “Sign me up for that exit.”

This next shot was completely unintentional—I was changing the settings on my camera, and I don’t think I even looked when I took it. But something about it strikes me. It’s such a candid and honest moment. My brother’s face really expresses the underlying feelings from the week.

The view from Mission Hill Cemetery. Again, the setting up there is just gorgeous. That’s Canada in the distance.

And, of course, I got to see my favorite little nephew, Henry (here he is playing with my cousin’s little girl, Addison). Baby with bear ears? Adorable.

Yes, we buried him up to his knees to see if he could stand. I think he decided he’d rather munch on rocks and dirt.

A Charming Bake Sale

Despite my own lack of skills in the kitchen, I was so happy to be a part of the cheerful Chicago Food Bloggers Bake Sale hosted at Smash Cake this past Saturday. All proceeds went to Share Our Strength to help fight childhood hunger in the U.S.

Many thanks to Maris of In Good Taste for all of her hard work putting this together.

Bahamas

Jeff and I made a trip to Florida over the weekend to visit some of our good college friends. We got off to a bit of a rough start—we arrived at the airport (Midway) about an hour and 20 minutes before our flight. About five minutes after arriving, we realized that our flight was actually our of O’Hare on the other side of the city. I’m sure you can imagine the stomach-dropping feeling that this situation can cause.

35 minutes and one $80 cab ride later, we arrived at the correct terminal. We were SO INCREDIBLY LUCKY. Our flight was delayed by 20 minutes (phew!). And so our trip began!

On Saturday morning, we boarded our one day cruise to the Bahamas. I’m not sure if you can really call this a “cruise” per se, but we were in good company, which made it lots of fun.

I enjoyed my moments on the beach before we grabbed lunch and headed back for the boat (we were only in the Bahamas for about two hours).

Portraits: Jess

A few weeks ago, we gathered a few lovely ladies and some awesome photographers for a little photo shoot in the park. This is the first of three parts from that day.

While the black and white shots are fun, Jess is a great model for color shots. Those bright blue eyes—aren’t they gorgeous?

Jelly Family Dinner

As small business owners, we’re very involved with Jelly Chicago, a group of Chicago entrepreneurs who work together twice a week at a coffee shop. On Friday night, we had a little “work” family dinner/happy hour at The Coop, a Chicago co-working space.

If you work for yourself in Chicago, come join us sometime!
